Budowa zapory wiązała się z niemałą ingerencją w środowisko naturalne. W trosce o mieszkających tu przedstawicieli fauny powstała sztuczna Ptasia Wyspa, na której ptaki zakładają gniazda lęgowe. Nad Jeziorem Sromowieckim zamontowano bariery uniemożliwiające żabom wchodzenie na drogę, gdzie wcześniej masowo ginęły pod kołami samochodów.
